Many believers understand that salvation is by grace, yet still live as though God’s acceptance rises and falls with their performance. A failure brings fear. A difficult week produces doubt. The awareness of continuing sin leaves them wondering whether God is still pleased with them. In Ephesians 1:6, Paul gives a truth strong enough to steady the heart: God “hath made us accepted in the beloved.” Our position before God is not the result of our effort. It is the work of God, received through faith and secured in Jesus Christ.
To be accepted in the beloved means more than being tolerated, overlooked, or allowed to remain at a distance. The believer is declared righteous and received in the standing of Christ Himself. Jesus became sin for us, shed His blood as the full payment for sin, and provides the righteousness no law-keeping or human goodness could ever produce. The Father’s acceptance of the believer rests on His love for His Son and His satisfaction with the Son’s finished work. That is why the weary believer can rest: Jesus is enough.
Pastor Jake uses the account of Mephibosheth to show the wonder of being welcomed for the sake of another. Mephibosheth had no strength, position, or inheritance to offer David, yet he was brought to the king’s table because of David’s love for Jonathan. In a far greater way, God receives those who are in Christ because of His beloved Son. When this grace truly captures the heart, the temporary things of life begin to lose their grip. Human approval, possessions, cultural anxiety, and endless distractions are placed in their proper perspective. The call of the sermon is to stop counting what we think we deserve, marvel at what we have received, and courageously remove whatever keeps our hearts from being satisfied in Christ.
